Jiraan’s Sirto: A Transcendent Fusion of Middle Eastern and European Traditions

Jiraan – Sirto (Zephyrus Records, 2023)

Under the visionary leadership of Syrian violinist and composer Shalan Alhamwy, Jiraan is a groundbreaking ensemble that redefines the boundaries of world music. Comprised of twelve exceptional musicians, each representing distinct musical traditions from across the globe, Jiraan embarks on a remarkable exploration of world music.

Their debut album, Sirto, offers a sophisticated and compelling fusion of Greek Sirto with elements of Middle Eastern, Balkan, and jazz traditions. Through masterful improvisation and jazz-inflected solos, the collective transcends established musical categories, crafting an innovative intercultural sound that defies convention and resonates with a global audience.

Formed in 2016 in Belgium, Jiraan creates a powerful dialog between past and present, East and West.
