Open The Door For Three – A Prosperous Gale (2024)
Veteran Irish traditional music trio Open The Door For Three is set to release their fourth full-length album, A Prosperous Gale, on September 13th, 2024. The album’s title is inspired by a line from the song “William Glen.”
Open The Door For Three includes fiddler Liz Knowles (USA); piper Kieran O’Hare (USA); and vocalist and bouzouki player Pat Broaders (Ireland). Based in the USA, the group is known for their deep connection to the Irish music tradition, combining centuries-old tunes with fresh arrangements and original compositions. Their performances are an enticing mix of unearthed melodies, newly composed pieces, and tributes to the musicians who influenced them.
“The way we work is different from a band that might, say, get together and write all the songs for a new project,” Irish American piper O’Hare explains. “We exist within the Irish tradition of music making, which means that we carry hundreds and even thousands of songs and melodies around in our heads, so we have that deep well to draw from. But Open the Door for Three has always been about digging new wells too—we actively go out and source material from old albums, old archives, manuscripts, family members, friends, musical mentors, and we even learned one tune on this album from an Instagram clip!“
One notable track, “Jackson and Jane,” features a unique suite of seemingly unrelated tunes, offering a broader canvas for the trio to explore different textures and tempos. Another lovely track, “Farewell, Lovely Mary,” begins with a traditional song learned from an archival recording, enhanced by Broaders’ inventive bouzouki backing and further enriched by a new tune composed by fiddler Liz Carroll.
O’Hare likens the experience of being immersed in the Irish musical tradition to “swimming in an ocean of music, where the tides and waves bring new and unexpected discoveries.”
