The International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago has released the program for its fall Chicago Latino Music Series. The series begins on Saturday, September 14, with the Chicago debut of Madrid-based Senegalese artist Sidy Samb at the Instituto Cervantes. It will conclude on Sunday, November 24, with a solo performance by Brazilian pianist André Mehmari at the Epiphany Center for the Arts.
Of the eleven scheduled concerts, over half will feature artists making their Chicago debut. Venues include the Instituto Cervantes, City Winery, the Old Town School of Folk Music, the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center, the Logan Square Auditorium, and the 18th Street Casa de la Cultura.
This season also introduces “Oi, Brazil!,” a year-round initiative promoting Brazilian arts across various disciplines, including music, theater, dance, food, and film. Four of this season’s concerts are part of this program, featuring performances by the Alejandro Brittes Trio, the Vinicius Cantuária Trio, Luciana Dom and Gafieira Rio Miami, and André Mehmari.
“This fall season is all about musical cross-pollination: how musicians find commonalities across genres and how they mix and match them to create new sounds, from Sidy Samb’s wild fusion of flamenco and Senegalese music to Gafieira Rio Miami’s fusion of samba, funk and soul,” said the International Latino Cultural Center’s Deputy Executive Director Mateo Mulcahy. “The ILCC has, since its inception, devoted a significant space to Brazilian culture through the Chicago Latino Film Festival and its many performing arts showcases. By curating all of our Brazilian arts programming under the Oi, Brazil! umbrella, we aim to provide audiences with a better understanding and a deeper appreciation for that country’s rich cultural output.”
