As Night Falls on Dublin Town presents the enthralling songs and music of Irish singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer Donal Donohoe. He plays practically all the instruments, accompanying himself on guitars, harmonica, and percussion.
Donal Donohoe’s songs are beautiful, poetic, accessible and masterfully crafted. His music style incorporates elements of blues, evocative instrumental music, folk, swing, and exquisite guitar work. While he may not possess exceptional vocal skill, it’s noteworthy that he brings forth a distinctive, intimate style to his performances.
Born in Dublin, Donal Donohoe began playing guitar at the age of ten. Initially influenced by folk music and blues, he later incorporated elements of rock, Latin music, and jazz into his repertoire, developing a unique guitar style.
During his teenage years, he drew inspiration from Bert Jansch, Davy Graham, and Mississippi John Hurt, shaping his early guitar playing and songwriting. Employing a fingerstyle ‘folk baroque’ approach pioneered by his influences, he explored harmonic and rhythmic possibilities that became foundational in his musical journey.
Donal started performing in small clubs in Dublin before venturing to continental Europe, where he developed his craft through live gigs and musical exploration. Upon returning to Ireland, he released three albums of original songs: Midnight ’til Noon (2005), Ceol ‘s Rann (2007), and Slipstring (2011). Currently residing in the hills south of Dublin, Donal continues to perform live, as well as write and record new material.
