Alxaraf: Bridging Sephardic and Flamenco Music | Debut Album Exodus (2024)

Alxaraf – Exodus (digital dos, 2024)

The members of the Alxaraf group were immersed in flamenco from a young age, traveling the world with their voices and instruments. In their maturity, they conceived this musical project to revive and bring to light the rich cultural legacy of ancient Al-Andalus, an era they hold dear. In the musicians’ view, medieval Al-Andalus was known for its purported harmonious coexistence among the Three Cultures (Christian, Sephardic Jewish and Muslim) in Andalusia, though historical accuracy may vary.

Their debut album, Exodus (2024), exemplifies how Sephardic musical tradition intertwines with flamenco. Alxaraf subtly, respectfully, and creatively adapted Sephardic songs to mix them with flamenco.

Building upon flamenco as their foundation, the band draws inspiration from Arabic, Andalusian, and Spanish folk music to enrich flamenco, appealing to individuals whose musical sensibility transcends boundaries.

Vicente Gelo (vocalist) was born in Albaida del Aljarafe, Seville, in 1976. Gelo is an exemplary, creative, spontaneous, and distinctive singer.
