Irish singer Ríoghnach Connolly, from Armagh and named BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year, leads the Manchester-based band Honeyfeet. Known for their diverse musical styles, the group explores a wide range of sounds, from protest songs to dance rhythms. Connolly’s performances are characterized by her wit and engaging stage presence, bringing a mix of multicultural influences and creative energy.
Connolly’s music is deeply rooted in traditional and folk traditions. Drawing from her family’s rich musical heritage, she incorporates styles from around the world, mixing Sean-nós Caoineamh, West African griot, and American deep-south vibes. In addition to her work with Honeyfeet, Connolly performs traditional music with Stuart McCallum as The Breath.
Honeyfeet’s lineup includes Lorien Garth Edwards on bass, Ellis Davies on guitar, John Ellis on keyboards, Biff Roxby on brass, and Phill Howley on drums. The band’s sound ranges from big-band swing to blues-tinged folk, unified by Connolly’s powerful vocals and flute.
As part of the “They Want What You’ve Got” tour, Honeyfeet performed across England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales to promote their upcoming single, also titled “They Want What You’ve Got,” set for release in October 2024. This single highlights the band’s dynamic range and Connolly’s poetic lyrics.
Honeyfeet’s album, Orange Whip, released in March 2018, received critical acclaim and was named BBC 6 Music’s Album of the Day. The band has become a fixture on the festival circuit, performing at major events such as Shambala, Beautiful Days, Cambridge Folk Festival, Glastonbury, Boomtown, Wilderness, Secret Garden Party, and Kendal Calling.
In 2024 Honeyfeet was selected to perform at the Horizons Regional Stage in Manchester during world music showcase WOMEX.
