Irish Avant-Folk Ensemble Córas Trio

Córas Trio (formerly McAuley/McKeown/McCullagh) are deeply exploring the essence of what it means to be an Irish musician within improvised music today. Their emergent sounds hold the answer.

Córas Trio breathe new life into the art of spontaneity. Traditional melodies ebb and flow through compelling textures that spotlight the fiddle, guitar, and percussion, all enhanced by transcendental electronics. They suspend elements of collective free improvisation, infusing it with the playful spirit of a proper seisiún.

As part of a burgeoning wave of innovative musicians in Belfast, Córas Trio explores the relationship between traditional music and contemporary 21st-century experiences. They boldly challenge notions of cultural purism, effortlessly blurring the lines of modern musical practices with fearless and unapologetic explorations of new ideas.

Since bursting onto the scene, they have supported experimental folk luminaries such as Aidan O’Rourke & Brìghde Chaimbeul and Joshua Burnside. Their music has appeared at the ‘IF 2022’ improvisation festival in Canada, where they performed alongside Evelyn Glennie and William Parker, as well as the 2023 London Jazz Festival.
