Maré, a Musical Celebration of Portuguese fishermen and fishing communities

Maré – Maré (Sons Vadios, 2024)

Maré (Tide) is a new release celebrating the lives and hard work of Portuguese fishermen and fishing communities. The launch took place on May 31, National Fishermen’s Day in Portugal.

This artistic production by Sons Vadios, a cultural cooperative and folk label based in Nazaré, a coastal city north of Lisbon, combines lively traditional and original music with Portuguese videography and literature. It features stirring performances by a gathering of some of the finest musicians and singers in the Portuguese contemporary folk scene, representing various regions. These include Abílio Caseiro (Nazaré), Celina da Piedade (Setúbal), Quiné Teles (Ílhavo), Sara Vidal (Nazaré), Zé Francisco (Tavira). In addition, the project also features João Espada (videography) and Sónia Pereira (Portuguese literature).

The project was initiated as part of the 80th anniversary of Mútua dos Pescadores in November 2022. It includes contributions from the Mútua Choir, comprising individuals connected to the fishing sector, who participated in several songs, including the launch single “Toma lá, dá cá.”

In addition to music, the project features literary contributions from João Delgado (Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Mútua Fishermen’s Cooperative), musician Manuel Rocha, and journalist Abel Coentrão, as well as videos of traditional songs and visual illustrations by João Espada.

Quiné Teles led the musical direction, studio work, mixing, and mastering in Ílhavo, with José Moz Carrapa assisting with the recording of the Mútua Choir in Lisbon. Marcos Porto handled the graphics, illustration, and layout.

Musicians; Abílio Caseiro on cavaquinho, mandolin, Portuguese guitar, electric guitar; Celina da Piedade on vocal, accordion; Quiné Teles on percussion, vocals; José Francisco on acoustic guitar, vocals; and Sara Vidal on vocals, Celtic harp.
