Benson’s “Donner Pass” is a haunting instrumental composition by the duo of award-winning banjo player Kristin Scott Benson and acclaimed mandolinist Wayne Benson. Following their previous full-length album, Pick Your Poison, released by Mountain Home Music Company, this track marks their first original piece since last year.
Written by Wayne Benson, “Donner Pass” draws inspiration from the historical tragedy of the Donner Party, who faced a devastating winter in 1846. “I composed this tune while traveling with IIIrd Tyme Out near the location where the Donner Party endured their ordeal,” Wayne explains, referencing his nearly 30-year association with the band.
The track features contributions from guitarist Cody Kilby, drummer Tony Creasman, and bassist Kevin McKinnon. Together, they create a foreboding atmosphere that captivates listeners from the solo mandolin introduction to the fading conclusion, symbolizing the lives lost during that harsh winter.
Rather than relying on dramatic musical gestures, the ensemble focuses on the interplay of mandolin, banjo, and guitar, presenting the simple yet evocative theme in varied configurations. This approach emphasizes delicate restraint over virtuosic performance, enhancing the track’s compelling nature.
“This is one of my favorite tunes Wayne has written,” says Kristin Scott Benson. “It has a dark feel, fitting for the title and historical context. The dynamic shifts throughout the track add depth, making it enjoyable to work with a simple melody to evoke different moods.”
