Ruca Rebordão Visits the Sounds of Angola, Brazil, and Portugal

Ruca Rebordão – Mestiço Atlântico (RUMA Records, 2024)

Ruca Rebordão, a seasoned musician known for his contributions to over 200 albums and his roles in various bands (Palmares, Banda Desenhada, Valdez e as Piranhas Douradas, A Fúria do Açúcar, N’Goma Makamba, D’Alambre, Couple Coffee & Band, Samadhi, among others), released his world fusion solo album, Mestiço Atlântico in April 2024.

Mestiço Atlântico is a collaborative project, featuring contributions from notable musicians, composers, and authors. The album is deeply influenced by Rebordão’s cultural experiences across the Angola-Brazil-Portugal triangle:

Angola represents Rebordão’s birthplace and home until age 13, where he discovered rhythm and began his musical journey. Meanwhile, Brazil signifies the vibrant environment of his adolescence, where he absorbed the country’s rich musical diversity. Lastly, Portugal represents his familial roots and current home, where he has established himself as a professional musician.

Rebordão is a top-notch percussionist in high demand. So, it’s no surprise that Mestiço Atlântico features a captivating array of percussion instruments, from thumb pianos and berimbau to a variety of drums, all woven together with compelling lead and harmony vocals. The album spans a mix of styles, combining deeply rooted traditional sounds with modern, attention-grabbing hooks.

The guests on the album contribute additional colors to the album in the form of vocals, guitars, piano, flute, chamber strings and more. The list includes Rão Kyao, Paulo de Carvalho, Luanda Cozetti, Norton Daiello, Luiz Caracol, Sandra Martins, José Fialho Gouveia, Ciro Bertini, Beto Bertolini, António Pinto, Ivo Costa, Gustavo Roriz, Múcio Sá, Nanã Sousa Dias, Marta Coutinho, Chris Wells, Guto Lucena, Biru, and Rebordão’s daughter, Maiara Reb.
