Musician and Oral Historian Fatou Mint Engdhey of Mauritania

Fatou Mint Engdhey, a distinguished bearer of the Iggawin tradition (akin to African griots or European minstrels) has mastered the intricate art of the ardin, a Moorish harp traditionally played by women. Her repertoire encompasses the rich cultural heritage of the Mauritanian people, drawing upon both secular and sacred texts.

Through her music, she revives ancient poetry, recounts the epic narratives of past empires, and expresses the poignant tales of love and longing. Additionally, she invokes the spiritual devotion of mystics such as Al-Burai and Ibn Al-Farid. Engdhey’s profound artistry has garnered her recognition, leading to performances at prestigious festivals both within Mauritania and internationally.
