Bára Zmeková – Jediný na světě (Tranzistor, 2024)

Bára Zmeková, a celebrated singer and composer from Prague, has earned numerous prestigious music awards and nominations. These include a Czech Music Academy Award nomination for Discover of the Year and Solo Interpreter, as well as winning both the Professionals and Audience Award at the international showcase festival Czech Music Crossroads. Additionally, she was officially selected for WOMEX 2020.

Her new album, Jediný na světě (This Alone), features 11 tracks that mix personal testimony with Czech lyrics. The songs draw from Zmeková’s experiences and memories, ranging in genre and theme. You’ll find a mix of sounds, from imaginative jazz, folk influences and electronic soundscapes to bouncy pop songs and experimental nuances.

The recording process began in January 2023, in a gothic building in Úštěk, where Zmeková worked on a historic 1892 Steinway & Sons piano. Over the winter, she crafted new compositions, developed lyrics, and experimented with her voice, piano, and synthesizers.

Zmeková collaborated with numerous musicians for this album, including her band members Viktor Dořičák, Michal Mihok, Nina Marinová, Ondřej Vychodil, and new multi-instrumentalist Pavel Šmíd. The album also features guest artists such as singer Lenka Dusilová, double bassist Petr Tichý, bass guitarist Tomáš Liška, and Australian cellist Francesca Mountfort.
