The album Vou Ficar Neste Quadrado (I will stay in this square) by Ana Lua Caiano, a Lisbon-based artist, has captured the top rank on World Music Charts Europe for June 2024.
Caiano finds creative inspiration in moments of silence, often during walks or sleepless nights. Her innovative approach to music mixes contemporary electronic sounds with traditional Portuguese influences she absorbed as a child. This fusion has shaped her work, starting with two EPs, Cheguei Tarde A Ontem (2022) and Se Dançar É Só Depois (2023), which garnered international attention. Vou Ficar Neste Quadrado, her debut album with Glitterbeat, presents her evolution from classical piano and jazz studies to an eclectic mix of electronic textures and club beats. Her compositions, which typically begin with simple melodic ideas, are deeply rooted in her cultural heritage, yet they explore new musical territories.
During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Caiano developed her craft by experimenting with electronic music at home. She came up with a unique live performance style, using a MIDI keyboard, sampler, looper, and traditional percussion instruments. Her lyrics, often inspired by overheard conversations, weave personal and fictional narratives. The title track of her album, “Vou Ficar Neste Quadrado,” critiques the complacency of everyday life. Onstage, she creates a visually engaging experience, underscoring the importance of a visual identity for each song.
