Åsmund Reistad’s Deep Reverence for Norwegian Folk Music Tradition

Åsmund Reistad – Urban folkemusikk (Lydpressa, 2024)

Åsmund Reistad is a highly regarded guitarist and composer. He has been a prominent figure in Norwegian folk music for over two decades, contributing to the genre’s evolution with his innovative approach. Collaborating with notable musicians in the country, he has established himself as a versatile performer with a wide technical range and a distinctive musical style.

The album primarily features imaginative, mesmerizing and playful tracks that elegantly mix folk music with fresh, captivating elements. The lovely standout piece, “Velkommen dag,” that features exquisitely crafted, engaging vocals, captures the essence of the collection.

Other tracks that truly resonate with me are those that skillfully mix modern guitar intricacies with the delicate melodies of willow flutes and vital trumpet. It’s a captivating fusion that speaks volumes, weaving together the essence of contemporary artistry with the timeless beauty of traditional instruments and heartfelt singing. While the appeal of music is subjective, the sad and sappy saxophone-sounding pieces in this album don’t align with my personal taste or current mood.

In addition to guitar, Reistad demonstrates his versatility by playing bass, percussion, electric piano, reed organ, grand piano, and mandolin on the album. Guests include Bendik S. Qvam (goat horn, willow flute, trumpet) and Jørund F. Samuelsen (mixing, percussion, harmonica, etc.).
