Ashby Frank’s Emotive “Knee Deep In Bluegrass”

Ashby Frank‘s “Knee Deep In Bluegrass” is an emotive tribute to the late banjo legend Terry Baucom, written by Frank himself. Recorded by Mountain Home Music Company, this single highlights the enduring sense of community within the bluegrass music sphere. Following the success of his previous release, “Leaving Is Believing,” Frank entered the studio at the close of 2023 with a profound appreciation for the community that has upheld the genre for over fifty years.

The inspiration for this tribute arose from Frank’s personal connection to Baucom, his former bandmate in the Mashville Brigade. Terry Baucom passed away in December, and the day following his funeral, Frank and his team gathered to commence recording for his upcoming album. The decision to record a modified version of Baucom’s “Knee Deep” as a homage was made in consultation with Baucom’s widow, Cindy, who graciously approved the endeavor.

Frank’s rendition maintains the essence of Baucom’s original composition while infusing it with his own stylistic nuances. The track begins with a fresh, rhythmic prelude before delving into Baucom’s familiar theme. Frank’s mandolin expertise, coupled with the talents of collaborators such as banjoist Matt Menefee, fiddler Jim VanCleve, guitarist Seth Taylor, and the rhythm section comprising drummer Tony Creasman and bassist Travis Anderson, imbue the tribute with vitality and reverence. Each soloist shines in turn, encapsulating the collaborative spirit and virtuosity synonymous with bluegrass music.

“Bauc was performing at the first festival I ever attended in Denton, NC,” Frank recalls. “His style and persona has been an inspiration to me ever since that first meeting. I think Matt, Travis, Jim, Seth and Tony really nailed their parts on the tune. I hope our recording brings back fond memories for anyone who knew Terry and will honor him as he so richly deserves.”
