Dossel – Badoque (Dossel, 2023)
Dossel launched his second album, Badoque, last year. Similar to his previous work, his compositions offer a unique perspective on the world, evoking emotions akin to standing atop a lighthouse. The opening track, “Filho da Aldeia,” a collaboration with Jam da Silva and Pai Guga, delves into themes of inner rebirth and communal connection, echoing indigenous wisdom on embracing the present through ancestral roots. This sets the thematic foundation that resonates not only in the lyrics but also in the diverse rhythmic influences throughout the album.
Under the musical guise of Dossel, led by composer Roberto Barrucho, the album embarks on a journey through percussive and elegant Afro-Brazilian jazz with tracks like “Marimba,” featuring Vasconcelos Sentimento, and introspective musings in “Lembrança de Céu.”
The homage to the hunter deity, “Odé,” and “Capoeira e sal,” underscore the album’s cultural roots, accompanied by a modern, transfixing, electronic, slow tempo reinterpretation of capoeira rhythms.
Transpasso” serves as a brief interlude preceding the exquisite “Deixa,” sung by Silvia Machete; while “Porto” features Micah, symbolizing the intersection of land and sea, both literally and metaphorically.
“Clarão,” the penultimate track, encapsulates the album’s thematic intensity, with Barrucho’s solo vocal performance complemented by Diana Nascimento’s evocative flute. Lastly, “É Possível, Djalma” pays tribute to percussionist Djalma Correa, featuring Mulambo Jazzagrário, drummer Thomas Harres, and percussionist Rodrigo Maré, immortalizing Correa’s legacy and his contribution to Brazilian music. This closing track serves as an emotive reminder of the album’s overarching theme of honoring ancestry, completing a cyclical journey that heralds new beginnings.
