Malcolm MacWatt Explores Shadows and Melodies on Dark Harvest

Malcolm MacWatt – Dark Harvest (Need To Know Records, 2024)

Malcolm MacWatt, the highly talented Scottish songwriter, released his latest album, Dark Harvest, on January 26th, 2024. Continuing his Trans-Atlantic musical journey, MacWatt skillfully combines Americana with British folklore, exploring contemporary issues through his music. Dark Harvest, influenced by Appalachian and Celtic sounds, brings into notice MacWatt’s multi-instrumental skills, with improvised arrangements during recording.

Despite lacking formal musical training and advanced equipment, MacWatt creates immediate and exciting music. “I don’t read or write music,” explains MacWatt. “I have very basic equipment with no recording software, so when I’m playing a fiddle part I need to be aware of what the banjo might do. For me, it’s a very immediate and exciting way to make music.”

From “Strong Is The North Wind” to “Semi Scotsman” and “The Church and the Crown,” the album delves into personal politics, addressing historical shadows with themes of karma and repercussion. Touching on horror, violence, and heroism, MacWatt’s lyrics are delivered with beautiful, enthralling melodies and a delicate touch.

Raised in the Scottish Highlands, MacWatt respects tradition but considers himself a contemporary folk artist, shaping new stories that reflect modern life. Notably, he’s a remarkable storyteller, with a magnetic, voice, and delivery. Following the success of Settler, Dark Harvest highlights MacWatt’s maturity and assurance in his creative space.

While his previous album Settler featured contributions from established names, Dark Harvest is a carefully curated collaboration with specific artists. “I was so invested in these songs that I considered every aspect to the point where I was writing and arranging songs for artists I hadn’t even approached yet,” he explains. “Had Angeline Morrison not agreed to sing on “Empire In Me” I probably wouldn’t have recorded it. As I was putting the title track “Dark Harvest” together, I could hear Nathan Bell’s voice and guitar. For “Out On The Western Plain” I wanted someone who could play the blues with all of Rory Gallagher’s fire and sensitivity and was blessed to work with Pat McManus. I’m so grateful to every single artist who gave of themselves for this project.”

Musicians: Malcolm MacWatt on fiddle, acoustic guitar, banjo, and harmonica; Nathan Bell on guitars and spoken word; Pat McManus on electric guitar; Phil Dearling on piano and electric guitar; Dave Martin on bodhran; Ian MacWatt on snare drum; Gillian MacWatt on Ceilidh fiddle; and Shannon Hynes on backing vocals.
