Sidiki Camara – Return to the Traditions (Global Sonics, 2023)
Sidiki Camara’s latest masterful work, Return to the Traditions, is a profound musical exploration that transcends borders and resonates with Malian roots. Commissioned by Global Oslo Music, this album stems from a composition premiered in 2022, where Camara, now residing in Oslo, Norway, delves deep into the music associated with the rites of passage in his native Mali.
Immersing himself in the traditional sounds of Mali, Camara skillfully weaves the fabric of his heritage through the intricate threads of the pentatonic scale and polyrhythms. The evocative tones emanate from the strings of the ngoni, a quintessential instrument in Return to the Traditions, complemented by a diverse array of percussion instruments.
The result is nothing short of captivating; a set of recordings hat unfold with the mastery of hypnotic ngoni, resonant bass notes, and the engaging pulse of percussion. Notably, throughout the album, Sidiki Camara, a leading Malian percussionist, displays his command of traditional musical forms.
Camara’s musical influences extend beyond the boundaries of his homeland. With a deft touch, he seamlessly integrates Norwegian Folk tunes into Return to the Traditions, both melodically and rhythmically. This unique fusion takes form with three bass players and soulful vocals, creating remarkable music that transcends cultural boundaries.
