Samite, Sean Harkness and Shem Guibbory Unveil Kumara: A Musical Tale of Healing and Transformation

Kumara – Kumara (2023)

Samite, the globally acclaimed Ugandan musician and humanitarian, has collaboratively created Kumara, a groundbreaking music project aimed at delivering original, tranquil, transformative, and finely crafted compositions. Teaming up with the highly sought-after solo guitarist and composer, Sean Harkness, and the internationally celebrated violinist and chamber musician, Shem Guibbory, the trio seeks to facilitate collective healing and emotional/spiritual transformation through their delightful art.

The first manifestation of this endeavor is the release of their self-titled debut album, Kumara. Recorded at Pyramid Sound Studios in August and September 2022, this album captures a live music experience designed to provide a safe haven for diverse global audiences. In this musical space, the community can collectively explore peace, transmuting fear into love and anger into joy. This initiative arises in response to the palpable imbalance and pervasive anxiety in today’s world, exacerbated by the looming threats of war, climate crisis, and the erosion of social institutions.

The name “Kumara,” derived from Sanskrit, encapsulates the essence of the project, signifying the harmonious balance of energies on Earth. The term encompasses “Khu,” representing the higher self, “Ma,” symbolizing the Divine Mother, and “Ra,” embodying the Father of Light.

The trio got together in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. Interestingly, Kumara’s formation was serendipitous, bringing together an African musician, a Metropolitan Opera musician, and a New York City session musician. From the very first note, they discovered a magical synergy and inner harmony within the music they co-created.
