The Singing Contest Cante por Serranas de Prado del Rey, celebrating its XLVII edition, is a significant event in the world of flamenco. Held annually, this year the contest honors the legacy of flamenco icon Lola Flores. The Provincial Culture Foundation and the Diputación de Cádiz support the event, attracting numerous singers to compete for awards. On Saturday, August 26, 2023, the winner will participate in a gala in which Macarena de Jerez will perform the show ‘Cien años de Lola.’
The contest features a traditional flamenco style called serrana, known for its depth and elegance. It’s a demanding style that showcases the cultural heritage of Prado del Rey and the Andalusian region. The contestants must perform in this style, aiming to promote and preserve it. The contest’s goal is to maintain cultural identity, educate younger generations, and gain recognition on national and international cultural platforms.
The contest’s winner will receive a substantial prize of 2,000 euros, with additional awards for second place and other categories. The final event takes place in Plaza de la Constitución, where attendees can obtain invitations.
Over the years, the contest has attracted renowned flamenco artists who were once unknown, contributing to its prestige. The Cante por Serranas contest not only celebrates flamenco but also preserves traditions, culture, and the rich heritage of the region.
