Ghana Meets New Orleans: A Fusion of Cultures in Flushing Town Hall’s Global Mashup Concert Series

The Global Mashup concert world music series at Flushing Town Hall continues with the “Ghana Meets New Orleans” concert featuring Kotoko Brass, a West African-inspired dance band, and Mona’s Hot Five with Queen Esther, a New Orleans-style jazz band. The Saturday, August 19, 2023, concert will present traditional music from both cultures and culminates in a collaborative and spontaneous jam session.

Kotoko Brass blends Ghanaian drum rhythms with New Orleans brass band sounds, creating an infectious and celebratory music experience. Mona’s Hot Five, led by clarinetist Dennis Lichtman, has been a central hub for early-era jazz musicians in New York City.

Queen Esther, a dynamic singer with Southern roots, explores cultural narratives through her music, influenced by African traditions and Black folkways.
