Serving as a grand finale, this work marks the culmination of Aaron Davis and the Coal Biters’ artistic endeavor. In 2013, fate conspired to unite Aaron with the rhythmic virtuoso, percussionist, and vocalist Ryan Gentry. A year later, the seasoned multi-instrumentalist George Holcomb joined their ranks, completing the trio. In 2015, Aaron Smith and the Coal Biters graced the world with their debut offering, The Way the World Turns. However, the tragic loss of Holcomb at the age of 76 spelled the end of this remarkable musical trinity.
Within the depths of The Legend of Sam Davis, Aaron Smith ventures fearlessly into the realm of unreliable narrators, for in the absence of trust, emotional context reigns supreme. Unveiling a resounding motif that reverberates through these tales is the indomitable spirit of familial resilience; the ceaseless pursuit of a better future. These narratives weave an intricate tapestry, exploring the extraordinary lengths families go to safeguard their kin, navigating the treacherous terrains where ideologies falter, and discovering the elusive path forward amidst the lingering aftermath.
Smith bares his soul, embracing the autobiographical essence of Sam Davis’s profound journey. Sam, haunted by a crisis of faith, embarked on an arduous quest to discover a new form of spiritual solace. Although Sam commenced his odyssey with a heroic self-perception, eventually, he confronted the stark realities of self and the world. This tale resonates with Smith, compelling him to confront his own truths and illuminate them through his lyrical creativity.
A testament to Smith’s resilience and unwavering commitment to his musical craft, his journey spans seasons of life, navigating the treacherous waters of creative exploration. The seeds of his music were sown during his formative years within the walls of his childhood church, where he first discovered the enchantment of songwriting on the grand piano. His ardor for music took root, extending to the banjo, which he diligently mastered. And, as destiny would have it, he found himself serenading the local community with the melodies of the French horn as a proud member of the high school band.
Fuelled by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, Smith honed his craft, eventually embarking on a collegiate odyssey that led him to immerse himself in the intricacies of French horn mastery. Guided by his passion, he lent his musical skill to the North Arkansas Symphony. Yet, the allure of rock beckoned him, leading him on a trip to Florida, where he reveled in vibrant melodies, wielding his trusty pink paisley Stratocaster. Alas, the intoxicating allure of the industry proved disillusioning, and Aaron found solace in a temporary sabbatical from the world of music, yearning for a respite from the tempestuous storm.
Upon his homecoming, the indomitable spirit of Ozark culture rekindled Aaron Smith’s creative flame. A transformative encounter with the enchanting melodies of Kelly and Donna Mulhollan from Still on a Hill, at an intimate house concert, electrified his soul with the profound connection fostered by the indomitable spirit of folk music. A newfound desire surged within him, an insatiable longing to create music, to channel the Mulhollans’ timeless enchantment into his very being. In those moments, Aaron became a conduit for untold stories.
Fate unveiled yet another pivotal figure in Aaron’s melodic odyssey, veteran troubadour Jack Williams. This serendipitous union altered the course of Aaron’s musical trajectory, opening the gates to a world of acceptance within the revered realms of folk music. Encircled by kindred spirits and guided by the nurturing touch of the sagacious Steve Gillette, Smith’s artistic pursuits surged to new heights.
