The Global Mashup world music concert series continues to offer diverse musical experiences that blend genres and cultures. On Friday, May 19, the concert series presents “Ireland Meets Mexico,” featuring Cillian Vallely, an Irish musician renowned for his masterful playing of the uilleann pipes and low whistle, alongside the Mexican band Jarana Beat.
Cillian Vallely, who performs with the celebrated Irish band Lunasa, has earned a reputation as a skilled and accomplished musician. Lunasa has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including The Hollywood Bowl, Glastonbury Festival, and WOMAD Aledaide, and has toured extensively throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. Vallely has also collaborated with renowned artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Natalie Merchant, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, and Tim O’Brien, in addition to making guest appearances on over 50 albums.
Jarana Beat is a 10-piece ensemble that incorporates music and dance into its dynamic live performances. The band’s lively and uplifting sound draws on a variety of musical traditions, including Mexican folk and Afro-Amerindian styles, and features percussive footwork performed by dancers dressed in traditional costumes. Under the leadership of composer and producer Sinuhé Padilla-Isunza, Jarana Beat brings together a group of accomplished performers from Mexico and around the world to create a truly unique cross-cultural sound. Drawing on a range of influences, including Son Jarocho, Son Guerrerense, Son Huasteco, Salsa, Cumbia, Samba, and Rumba, the band takes audiences on a journey through Afro-Amerindian culture that is both enlightening and enjoyable.
