British Latin jazz ensemble Colectiva has released a music for their anti-patriarchy single that challenges and subverts perceptions of ‘femininity.’ After releasing their debut single in 2021, the female collective have emerged as one of London’s most exciting new jazz ensembles. Dubbing their style jazz-tropicaliente they play a mix of Afro-Latin rhythms inspired by salsa and jazz big bands of the 1950s through to the 1970s. The flexible ensemble of women instrumentalists can range from a five to an eight-piece band and beyond.
“How Do You Like Your Ladies?” channels their frustration at patriarchy and gender-based violence, they deliver a three-minute instrumental, rich in Afro-Latin rhythms, fiery horns, salsa influences and jazz-inflected breaks.
“How Do You Like Your Ladies?” features Sarah Wackett (flute), Poppy Daniels (trumpet), Viva Msimang (trombone), Luisa Santiago (keys), Alley Lloyd (bass), Lilli Elina (congas), Lya Reis Guerrero (drums), with additional writing credits to Deanna Wilhelm and Cleo Savva.
