The album Kalasö by Afrikana Soul Sister (Les Faux-Monnayeurs) won the Best Global Music Album of the Year at the 51st Annual JUNO Awards [global music is a synonym for world music]. The award ceremony held last night celebrated Canada’s best or most popular music artists.
Afrikana Soul Sister includes seasoned Quebec multi-instrumentalist, producer and arranger Jean-François Lemieux (Jean Leloup, Daniel Bélanger, Ariane Moffatt); Senegalese percussionist Fa Cissokho; and Malian singer Djely Tapa (named Révélation CBC/Radio-Canada for the year 2019-2020 in the World Music category).
The group delivers Afro-electro music infused with percussive yet futuristic flavors, combining modernity and tradition. Afrikana Soul Sister tackles the relationship with nature, the strength of work, respect for elders and the beauty of life through lyrics in Manding and Wolof.
Kalasö (translates as “We will all go to class”), features guests appearances by Ariane Moffatt (“Tinnami”), Émile Bilodeau (“Fantani”) and Naxx Bitota (“Buelayi”).
