Tião Carvalho at Mestre dos Saberes Festival, a Showcase of Traditional Brazilian Music Masters

Por Do Som presented a new showcase of Brazilian artists in December 2021. The festival called “Mestre dos Saberes” (masters of knowledge) paid tribute to 5 traditional music masters who perform and disseminate Brazilian culture.

The concerts brought together traditional genres such as bumba meu boi, jongo, samba, capoeira, samba de roda, afro music, pulla de rede, afoxé and cancioneiro popular (traditional songbook).

The first concert of the series took place December 15, highlighting Tião Carvalho. Born in Maranhão, living in São Paulo, Tião Carvalho is a singer, composer, musician, dancer, and educator. He has been working for over 40 years, spreading Brazilian traditional culture in Brazil and around the world in musical presentations and workshops he teaches.

Tião Carvalho is the founder and director of the Cupuaçu Group. He has two solo albums released, “Tião Canta João” and “Quando Dorme Alcantara”. Notably, Tião Carvalho has deep knowledge about dances, songs, popular games and traditional festivities.

The lineup includes Tião Carvalho on vocals; Ariel Coelho on percussion; Celso França on drums; Ivan Gomes on double bass; Marina Bastos on winds; Paola Gibram on accordion and keyboard; Pedro Cury on guitar; and Yuri Carvalho on percussion. Producer: Maisa Castro.
