The SGAE Foundation Announces the First Paco de Lucía Flamenco competition

Coinciding with International Flamenco Day (November 16), the SGAE Foundation has launched the first Premio SGAE de Flamenco Paco de Lucía, a competition with the purpose of stimulating and recognizing instrumental compositions. The awards will be given to works by composers linked to the flamenco genre who are members of the Sociedad General de Autores y Editores (SGAE) music rights organization.

The deadline for submitting materials will remain open until January 14, 2022. Compositions will be judged based on the premises of creativity, innovation and quality. A professional jury appointed by the Flamenco Working Group of the SGAE and by the SGAE Foundation will include five members, selected from prominent composers, musicians and flamenco experts. The jury will select the final eight works that will be presented live by the authors themselves or by a group designated by the SGAE Foundation. The finalists’ will be announced before March 31, 2022.

Aimed at all SGAE members, authors will be able to compete with instrumental works for solo, duo or trio exclusively, with a combination of the following instruments: guitar, piano or keyboard, drums, percussion, handclapping (palmas), acoustic double bass or electric bass, saxophone, trumpet and / or flute. The duration of the works may not be less than four minutes or more than seven.

The SGAE Foundation will award a total of €11,700 euros as follows: A first prize of €6,000, a second prize of €3,000, a third prize of €1,500 and a fourth prize of 1,200 euros.

The works may be submitted by certified mail, courier service, or by personal delivery at the SGAE Foundation (Calle Bárbara de Braganza, 7 – 28004 Madrid, Spain), or at any of the SGAE headquarters and general delegations in Spain and abroad (which can be consulted on the SGAE website).
