Kôrôlén, the new collaborative album from kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté and the London Symphony Orchestra, is out today on World Circuit Records.
Commissioned as a special project by the Barbican Centre in London and produced by World Circuit, Kôrôlén presents Toumani and his group of prominent Malian musicians (including Kasse Mady Diabaté and Lassana Diabaté), accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra, and conducted by Clark Rundell.
Kôrôlén features arrangements by Nico Muhly and Ian Gardiner. Kôrôlén, translates from the Mandinka language as “ancestral.” Kôrôlén brings together ancient griot/jeli melodies and Western orchestral arrangements.
“There’s a mystic and classical side to African music, a divinity,” says Toumani. “It is not only about dance, and people need to know this.”
