Tunde Documentary to Spotlight Kora and Cello Virtuoso

Global Arts Live will present a free livestreaming of the documentary Tunde on February 6, 2021 at 8:00 p.m. EST. Tunde Jegede is a celebrated British-Nigerian composer, producer, cellist, and kora virtuoso. He is one of the few composers in the world to be steeped in both Western and African musical traditions having studied both cello in London and the kora in The Gambia from a very early age.

Tunde is a documentary by filmmaker Ron Wyman that includes the legendary late Malian vocalist Kassé Mady Diabaté and focuses on Tunde’s music and the collection of international artists and singers he assembled to create The Nomadic Mystics.

The film follows the group through the process of rehearsing, recording, and performing and brings a unique insight into the working progress of a new music that traces and celebrates the legacy of the African connection with its Diaspora. The film also features performances by jazz vocalist Cleveland Watkiss, Sona Maya Jobarteh (Tunde’s sister), and kora virtuosos Toumani Diabaté and Wali Cham.

A live conversation with the filmmaker, Ron Wyman, will follow the screening.

Tunde Jegede’s discography includes: Lamentation (1995), Malian Royal Court Music (1996), Still Moment (2007), There Was a Time (2009), How Many Prophets (2009), Heritage (2014), Testimony (2014), The Elements (2014), Mali in Oak (2015) and The Emidy Project (2018).
