Lucas Nwananga has released his debut album titled Back to Soweto on Umsakazo Records. Nwananga’s music is deeply inspired by genuine 1960s South African township guitar jive.
Lucas was born in Yorkshire and fell in love with South African music. From a young age, Lucas started collecting valuable 78s, 45s and LPs of mbaqanga music, the electrified township rhythm of the 1960s.
In his teens, Lucas learned how to play lead and rhythm guitar as well as bass, drums and melodica by ear. He intentionally keeps all of his material stripped back in an effort to emulate the raw studio environment in which this music was developed.
