Global Music Month 2020, continues this week with world music-related online events from six of the 19 participating festivals in the United States and Canada.
This week’s events include:
- A performance from Tunisia’s Ghalia Benali for SAMA: Seattle Sacred Music (Thursday 9/17, 11:00 AM PST).
- Brazilian/Colombia/Venezuelan collective LADAMA will take a deep dive into Latin Alternative music with a free WMI Plus conversation and short set for NYC’s World Music Institute (Thursday 9/17, 6:00 PM EST).
- Sets from Canada’s Al Qahwa and Colombia’s Palo Cruza’o at London, Ontario’s TD Sunfest (beginning Thursday 9/17, 8:00 PM EST)
- A mix of live and archival performances from Toronto’s Small World Music Festival, featuring Egyptian-Canadian outfit Moneka Arabic Jazz, Colombia’s Tocani, and Zimbabwe’s late, great Oliver Mtukudzi (starts (Friday 9/18, 7:00 PM EST).
This weekend’s performances include:
- A full evening of performances from Toronto’s Small World Music Festival, featuring Namana (Canada / Russia), James Duff Quartet (Canada), Gloria Gift / Violiet Reza / beatmap (Canada / Uganda / Iran), Tarek Ghiri Quartet (Canada / Syria / Iran), Baoba w. Karla Garcia (Canada / Colombia / Venezuela), with archival performances from Ester Rada (Israel / Ethiopia) and Boban & Marko Markovic Orkestar (Serbia). (starts Saturday 9/19, 2:00 PM EST).
- Chicago-based Irish traditional band Anam Mór at World Music Festival Chicago (Sunday, 9/20, 1:00 PM CST)
- A final night of live and archived performances from the Small World Music Festival, including The Andrew Kay Project (Canada / India),The Path (Canada / Iran), Shaho Andalibi & friends (Canada / Iran).
