One of world music festival WOMAD’s ‘institutions’ is the Madras Café, a part of WOMAD since it began. It was started by supporters of Action Village India to both create tasty vegetarian dishes and raise awareness of and support for Action Village India partners across rural India.
Since early March, Madras Café has been developing this year’s alternatives to WOMAD 2020, which was cancelled due to COVID-19. Madras Café has created its re-imagined event: Madras Café Unlocked, a summer of free, all-digital, online content in support of Action Village India and partners.
Madras Café Unlocked will launch its five virtual stages: the Madras Café Family, Madras Boombox, Food for Thought, Partnerships & Solidarity and Jai Jagat Exhibition on the 24th, 25th & 26th of July (Friday to Sunday). Events will continue through August and September and will close with ‘The Meal’ on 26th September in support of JaiJagat 2020.
One of Madras Café Unlocked’s five stages is the Madras Boombox which will be offering sessions covering tribal Indian music such as Adivasi, Santhal and music from the Mopla community in Kerala as well as classical India music.
