Record Number of participants in Ortigueira Festival’s Runas Celtic Music Contest

Bands from eight countries and eight Spanish regions have submitted their proposals to the Runas Celtic music contest organized by the Ortigueira Festival in northwestern Spain. This is the largest international participation in the 20-year history of the contest dedicated to new talent in Celtic music.

Winners will perform at the Ortigueira Festival in 2021. The 2020 edition was cancelled due to COVID-19 and artists have had an opportunity to submit their music during the confinement period.  A total of 35 groups submitted their application to be one of the 3 finalists.  On Tuesday, June 16th, the technical committee appointed by the Ortigueira City Council selected a maximum of ten works that meet all the requirements set out in the contest rules.

In the second phase, the musical works of the ten selected groups  will be available for listening on the festival’s website, starting on Monday, June 22, at which time the online voting process will be activated and will end on Wednesday, July 8 at 2 p.m.

Finalists will be determined by a five vote system. One vote will come out of the popular vote on the Festival’s website, and the other four votes will come from a jury made up of musicians, music journalists and promoters selected by the City Council. The three finalist groups will be announced on the website on Tuesday, July 14, Wednesday, July 15 and Thursday, July 16, the day on which the 2020 Festival had been scheduled to start.
