North American showcase Mundial Montreal is hitting the road to New York City for the APAP conference. Mundial Montreal is partnering up again with Cumbancha and Drom to produce its biggest New York showcase to date with 9 artists on Friday, January 15, 2016.
Mundial artists include Pierre Kwenders, Élage Diouf, Ventanas, Cris Derksen and The Battle of Santiago playing alongside Francesca Blanchard and a special guest TBA (presented by Cumbancha), plus Septeto Nacional de Ignacio Piñeiro and Palenke Soultribe (presented by Drom).
Congolese-Canadian musician Pierre Kwenders combines Congolese rumba and Afro-electro beats. His 2014 album Le Dernier empereur bantou was a nominee for Canada’s prestigious Juno Award for best World Music Album.
Senegalese singer-songwriter and percussion maestro Élage Diouf relocated to Canada in 1996. His music mixes pop, world, blues and asiko. His new albim is “Melokáane.
Palenke Soultribe intermingles Afro-Colombian rhythms with electronic production. Founders and producers Juan Borda and Andres Erazo recruited drummers and percussionists in Los Angeles, which is the group is based.
Led by vocalist Tamar Ilana, Ventanas blends lively Bulgarian dance tunes, Greek, Turkish and Sephardic love songs with Flamenco dances.
Cris Derksen is an award-winning Canadian Aboriginal avant-garde cellist who builds layers of sound. Her music fuses the traditional and contemporary in multiple dimensions, incorporating her classical training and her aboriginal ancestry with electronics.
Francesca Blanchard mixes folk, jazz and roots-rock with French chanson.
The Battle of Santiago is a Canadian 7 piece band from Toronto that fuses Afrobeat, rock, electronica, and Latin music using Afro-Cuban rhythms, rock guitars, dub baselines and soaring horns and flutes.
Formed in 1927 by composer Ignacio Piñeiro, the Septeto Nacional is one Cuba’s essential ensembles. The Septeto Nacional has written many Cuban son classics and continues to advance the tradition.
