Jazz and Latin music star Chucho Valdés will present the latest incarnation of Cuba’s famed Irakere jazz fusion band on November 16th, 2015 at Page Auditorium in Durham, North Carolina. The concert is produced by Duke Performances and is part of a North American tour that will also visit New York, Boston, San Juan (Puerto Rico), Miami Beach, and Bethesda (Maryland).
Irakere was formed by conservatory graduates led by Valdés and featured other jazz giants such as Paquito D’Rivera and Arturo Sandoval. In 1979, after five years of international touring, Irakere became a sensation with a self-titled live album that earned the Grammy for Best Latin Recording.
Valdés has directed Irakere for the past four decades, incorporating the finest young Cuban musicians, making certain the band endures at the vanguard of Cuban jazz.
