L. Subramaniam, one of the greatest Indian violinists, is set to perform on Friday, September 18 at 20:00 (8:00 pm) in Baldwin Auditorium at Duke University.
A master of the violin in the Carnatic (southern Indian) classical music tradition and also a fusion pioneer, L. Subramaniam has spent a lifetime exploring the adaptability of the violin.
L. Subramaniam is a fertile composer and performer, who has brought international attention to the sound of the violin in the music of South Asia, with its characteristic slides, drones, and controlled oscillations between two notes.
Subramaniam’s acclaimed sountracks for films by Mira Nair and Bernardo Bertolucci boosted his reputation as one of India’s most accomplished and multidimensional artists.
Two other Carnatic musicians join Subramaniam: his son Ambi Subramaniam on violin and Mahesh Krishnamurthy on mridangam (barrel-shaped Carnatic drum).
