Don Carlos has led the cause of what is known as conscious reggae (songs of peace, love, politics, understanding, freedom) for more than three decades. He was born Ervin Spencer and grew up in the impoverished Waterhouse district of western Kingston, Jamaica, along with other future celebrated reggae musicians like King Tubby, King Jammy, and Junior Reid.
Don Carlos created the popular Jamaican vocal trio Black Uhuru in 1973, and later left for a solo career in the 1980s and 1990s that began with his solo album debut, “Suffering,” along the way joining a reunion of the original members of Black Uhuru in 1992.
Some of his essential albums are “Day to Day Living“, “Them Never Know a Natty Dread” and “Changes (Things in Life).”
