Coetus, the first Iberian percussion orchestra is set to perform at Sala Bikini in Barcelona on Thursday, June 19th at 21:00. This performance will celebrate the ensemble’s ‘Entre tierras’ (Between lands)’, and comes after a tour that included the top folk music festivals in Spain, the WOMAD festival in London, the BabelMed world music showcase in France and countries like Brazil, Algeria and Portugal. In addition, they will present for the first time, some new sketches that will form part of the album to come.
Meanwhile, Coetus is preparing a series of presentations with Argentine duo Juan Quintero y Luna Monti, slated for release next October. Aleix Tobias and Juan and Luna share their interest in searching for traditional music from their lands, rediscovering musical instruments and using them in a contemporary fashion. The Coetus ens emble and the Argentine duo will perform a repertoire mostly consisting of songs rooted in tradition from Spain and Argentina, linked historically and musically.
Coetus is the power and excitement of 17 musicians on stage, playing essentially percussion and vocals. It stems from the interest of its director Aleix Tobias to collect percussion instruments found in the Iberian Peninsula, the vast majority unknown. Coetus gathers them and endows the instruments with their own language, inspired by traditional rhythms, but with a current perspective, making an intensive dialog with the voices. Coetus has recovered traditional music and songs of celebration, lullabies, work songs, and children’s songs.
Coetus is also a large family of musicians, where each artist brings his or her own unique character and knowledge.
