A Voice Painting Sunlight

Ceumar - Silencia</a Ceumar – SilenciaSilencia (ARC Music EUCD 2564)

It is hard to improve on the artist’s own description of this release. About it, Ceumar, a second generation professional musician, longtime veteran of bars, concert halls and all venues in between and recognized acoustic pop treasure in her native Brazil, says the following:

The idea of my sixth album, “Silencia,” was to create, together with the musicians, a way to reveal the silences hidden in the sounds of my songs. I invited the magical French cello player Vincent Segal to produce the album. Vincent joined the Brazilian musicians who are old friends of mine, and with his incredible ideas, we recorded the songs live in Sao Paulo, Brazil. We played in the studio without the use of any headphones or a click track; completely acoustic! We were enjoying every moment in different line-ups. Based on my guitar and voice and the cello, we were feeding the songs with sweet percussion, cavaquinho, mandolin, double bass and other special instruments.”

That’s pretty much it. She’s making this one about the rests more than about the notes. It’s interesting and it works. It is hard to imagine a Ceumar release not working. Her voice is like Van Gogh’s paintbrushes, painting sunlight.
