Two of the finest acts from New Orleans are touring together for the first time this fall and will be performing on Thursday, November 6 at the Carolina Theatre of Durham, North Carolina. The show by Preservation Hall Jazz Band and their long-time friend and fellow New Orleans icon Allen Toussaint is presented by Duke Performances and the Carolina Theatre.
Preservation Hall Jazz Band is based out of the legendary French Quarter venue Preservation Hall and has performed around the world and toured with a diverse list of musicians, from My Morning Jacket to The Blind Boys of Alabama. Their discography includes That’s It, Essential Preservation Hall Jazz Band, The Preservation Hall 50th Anniversary Collection, Marching Down Bourbon Street, Sweet Emma, St. Peter & 57th St., and American Legacies.
Vocalist, pianist, songwriter, and producer Allen Toussaint is known for writing many New Orleans classics including “Southern Nights” and “Working in a Coal Mine.” His recordings include Songbook, The Bright Mississippi, The Allen Toussaint Collection, Southern Nights, Allen Toussaint, Everything I Do Gonh Be Funky: The Hit Songs & Productions 1957-1978, Life, Love And Faith, and What Is Success: The Scepter & Bell Recordings.
“After all these years of playing together in New Orleans and coming to the same festivals here and there around the world, it is amazing that we never hit the road as a package before,” said Preservation Hall band leader Ben Jaffe. “It was almost as if we’ve always just assumed it had already happened, and then one day it was like ‘Oh yeah, WE need to do this thing’ and the Oh Yeah! Tour was born.”
Unlike many tour packages, where two artists tour together but perform their own shows, this tour will be a mixed show, with lots of interaction between the two legends. “I’ve been playing with the guys in Preservation Hall around New Orleans since the 1960’s, so I’m really excited to finally get out on the road and perform together with them every night on a tour,” said Mr. Toussaint, “we’re going to have a lot of fun, and so will the audience.”
