The finals for the First Contest of Flamenco Cante (Song) will take place tomorrow, Thursday, October 16, 2014 at the Teatro de Las Cortes in San Fernando (Cadiz). The competition is organized by the Provincial Culture Foundation (PCF) of the Diputacion (Cadiz provincial government Council), in collaboration with flamenco clubs.
Nine young performers from across the Cadiz province will compete for three prizes awarded by the Council dispute: Enrique Afanador from Trebujena; Alba Bazán from Sanlucar; Jesus Lucas from San Fernando; Rafael del Zambo and Manuel de La Chochete from Jerez; Samuel Serrano from Chipiona; and Lele de Algeciras, Luis de Mateo and Fernando Canela from Algeciras, all aged between 18 and 35 years old.
The nine finalists have passed the semifinals stages contested at Peña Cultural Flamenca Puerto Lucero in Sanlúcar; the Sociedad del Cante Grande in Algeciras, and Asociación Cultural Fernando Terremoto in Jerez. The juries consisting of the president of each club, a representative of the Provincial Culture Foundation and a flamenco expert or renowned were responsible for choosing the three finalists in each region.
The competition grants three awards in the singing category, endowed with 1,500, 750 and 350 euros, plus a 500 euro award for best guitar accompanist, in memory of Paco de Lucia.
Admission is free until all seats of the theater are filled.
