Influential World Music Showcase Mundial Montreal Returns in November 2014

The fourth edition of world music showcase Mundial Montreal will take place November 18-21 in Montreal (Canada). The conference will feature 34 artists performing in various stages, and eight workshops and panels.

Mundial Montreal is one of the leading gatherings of world music professionals in North America. For the very first time, two of Quebec’s biggest industry events are collaborating to present the very best of world music’s international talent. Mundial Montreal and CINARS (International Exchange for Performers) will be co-presenting, in a joint showcase, Ukraine’s Dakhabrakha; Mozambique’s most popular export, Chico Antonio; virtuoso violinist Jaron Freeman-Fox; and Toronto Afro-Cuban, post-rock band The Battle of Santiago, who will take to the stage at Salle Pierre-Mercure, for an afternoon showcase.

Industry delegates will get to experience Canada’s most promising new world music acts, including Le Vent du Nord and Malika Tirolien, while benefiting from Mundial Montreal’s celebrated networking events, such as the ‘speed-schmoozing’ activity that allows professionals to connect with artist representatives, and meet one-on-one in a business-centric setting. It has been Mundial Montreal’s goal, since its creation, to create a network of dedicated and active world music presenters at a pan-Canadian and international level.

In collaboration with Stingray Music (formerly Galaxie), Mundial Montreal will present the Stingray Rising Star, where one showcasing artist performing at the festival will be named Canada’s most promising new talent, and receive a $3000 cash prize. Also returning this year, Mundial Montreal popular panels, where some of the most-respected names in the industry will discuss and educate their peers about the some of the hottest topics in the business. This year, licensing, pitching, engaging with your audience, and online presence, are some of the subjects that will be addressed in panels.

For the closing night, Mundial Montreal will present Gypsy Kumbia Orchestra and Lemon Bucket Orkestra. They will headline Return of the Big Bands, at Club Soda, on November 21st. The two ensembles are Canada’s major addition to the Balkan big band wave.

The “Aboriginal Sounds” series returns this year, integrated throughout the four-day programming, with talented women at its forefront. Soulful singer-songwriter Martha Redbone, experimental cellist Cris Derksen, vocalist Beatrice Deer and avant-garde rapper Kinnie Starr will be headlining this year’s edition of the series.
