This year’s WOMEX opening concert titled Compostela – The Roots, The Way’ will take place on Wednesday, October 22nd at 19:30 (7:30 pm) in the Auditorio de Galicia in Santiago de Compostela.
As the final stop on the ancient Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James) pilgrimage route, Galicia has transformed into a unique cultural melting pot with traditions and customs flowing through it from all across Europe, courtesy of the thousands of pilgrims who’ve passed through this region, as well as from the Atlantic.
‘Compostela – The Roots, The Way’ brings together first-class, outstanding Galician music with extraordinary artists from the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands to reflect the diversity of Galicia’s musical influences.
The show is directed by celebrated piper and flutist Xose Manuel Budiño and supported by well-known Galician artists Mercedes Peon and Xabier Díaz. The concert will feature Flamenco-jazz wind virtuoso Jorge Pardo, Fado singer Antonio Zambujo, Basque chalaparta group Oreka TX as well as young timple (small guitar from the Canary Islands and ancestor of the ukulele) virtuoso Germán López.
Compostela – The Roots, The Way will be a musical welcome to all WOMEX participants and provide a sample of what’s to come on this year’s local stage, Atlantic Connections.
