Innovative Ukrainian folk/world music band DakhaBrakha returns to Chicago today for a concert at Mayne Stage, 1328 W. Morse Ave. Chicago at 18:00 (6:00 pm).
The quartet of multi-instrumentalists from Kiev extracts its music from Ukrainian folk melodies and rhythms. Three young women, clad in wedding dresses and tall Cossack-style hats, sing in soaring, vibrato-less voices while accompanied by accordion, drums, and cello, as well as by the sole male instrumentalist, who also contributes a high vocal lead.
The name DakhaBrakha means “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language.Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian traditional instrumentation, the quartet creates a trans-global sound rooted in Ukrainian culture.
The quartet’s discography includes Yagudki and Good Night – Na Dobranich.
