Aziza Brahim (Western Sahara) is scheduled to perform on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Barbican in London. The young singer is granddaughter of Al Khadra, the legendary Saharawi war poetess. With her hauntingly beautiful voice, Aziza is now considered one of the most talented musical voices in Western Sahara.
Aziza was born and brought up in the Saharawi refugee camps in south-west Algeria, but the reality of this existence brought her to exile to study in Cuba and she now resides in Spain. Rooted in the Saharawi and Hassania vocal tradition, Aziza blends Saharan traditional music (she plays the tabal, a traditional hand drum) with blues, folk and Spanish rhythms to create a distinctive style all her own.
Addressing issues of displacement and heartbreak she has encountered as a refugee, Aziza is nowadays the great ambassador for the Saharawi cause, dedicating all her singing to her people.
Her album ‘Soutak‘ was released earlier this year on Glitterbeat Records.
