Brasil Music Exchange to Showcase the Best of Brazilian Music

Brasil_Music_ExchangeRadio production company Folded Wing teamed up with Brasil Música & Artes and Apex-Brasil to produce a monthly hour-long radio show called Brasil Music Exchange that showcases some of the best in new, emerging music from Brazil. “We’ve started off our 2014 series with 3 editions available now and monthly new shows to follow,” says David McLoughlin, International Manager for Brasil Música & Artes.

Presented by Brazilian music specialist, Jody Gillett, Brasil Music Exchange focuses on the new music, artists and local scenes coming out of Brazil in 2014, covering all genres, from jazz to pop, rock, funk and dance. With special guests, live sessions and hand-picked playlists the Brasil Music Exchange radio shows explores the diverse sounds and styles unique to the country, covering the entire spectrum of contemporary Brazilian music.

The first Brasil Music Exchange show launched in February 2014 and showcases new music from each of the 12 host cities of this year’s summer of sport in Brazil. Each subsequent show will focus on the music and artists from the 12 host cities and beyond, starting with Recife and Rio de Janeiro in March, Salvador and Sao Paulo in April, and Manaus, Fortaleza, Natal & Belem (Amazon/North) in May.

Karen Pearson, CEO and Founder of Folded Wing, said: “At Folded Wing, we’re all huge fans of Brazilian music and exciting, emerging new artists. Brasil Music Exchange will be an amazing opportunity for new Brazilian artists to have their music heard on new platforms across the world, which is a really good thing.

David McLoughlin adds:“With so many new ways to discover music, radio continues to be the key influence and inspiration for music fans worldwide. We are thrilled to present this show bringing the best new Brazilian sounds to a global audience.”

We aim to offer a wide range of entertainment to our customers and this summer the many excited travelers on our flights to Brazil can get in the mood with a selection of the best in Brazilian music, compiled and presented by true experts in the local scene,” said Richard D’Cruze, British Airways’ in-flight entertainment manager.

The Brasil Music Exchange show is hosted on Mixcloud, the British Airways in-flight entertainment system, and will be syndicated to stations around the world.

Brasil Music Exchange – Episode 1: City Sounds

“Our first show is a (World Cup) city-hopping trip featuring 12 new tracks from artists across the whole country, from the deep south right up to the Amazon. Artists in Brazil have a secret weapon – the incredible heritage of a country that is a bonafide musical giant. Right now they are also plugged into global currents and making their own innovative, unique and super-accessible music.

Our playlist highlights include the funky hip hop of Salvador’s OQuadro, bouncy indie pop with Vanguart from Cuiabá and trippy tropical rock with Brasilia’s Sexy-Fi. We have a lo-fi Rio gem by Rodrigo Amarante, beach party beats by Fortaleza’s DJ Guga de Castro, dreamy Recife rhythms by Siba and more…:

Brasil Music Exchange – Episode 2: Recife and Rio de Janeiro

This edition of Brasil Music Exchange is dedicated to the North-Eastern city of Recife and to Rio de Janeiro. What put Recife on the map was the ground-breaking Manguebeat cultural movement that kick-started an unprecedented creative explosion. Today musicians from Recife have a singular energy. In this show, we salute the heavy, prowling sound of Manguebeat godfathers Nação Zumbi, go deep into rural rhythms with Alessandra Leão and float in Lulina’s lo-fi dreams.

A long-time major music capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro is most associated with bossa nova and samba. Today the next generation of artists shakes up any assumptions with all kinds of new sounds. We play the latest by sought-after producer Kassin (a left-field love-song with fuzz guitar), tune in to the funky afrobeat of charismatic rapper BNegão and go all dark and spacey with Seu Jorge and Almaz.”
