‘Talk To Strangers‘ (Navigator Records) is the title of the debut solo album from Suffolk-born singer-songwriter Fiona Bevan that is generating a lot of excitement. It was , released April 28th. Bevan describes her debut album as “pop in disguise”, and the twelve have hooks, harmonies and melodies that linger from first listen, but are defiantly timeless and intentionally hard to pin down. Bevan already had success as a chart-topping songwriter for One Direction. She wrote all 12 songs on Talk To Strangers, which was recorded in producer Shawn Lee’s Bloomsbury studio on entirely analog equipment.
“The idea was to capture the energy of playing live,” says Bevan. “Nothing is digital or sterile; it’s golden and human. We recorded everything live and not to click and captured something that I’ve never managed in a studio before – the magic of live performance.”
Bevan plays guitar, violin, double bass, accordion, and harp, and whistle of birdsong. She also has an extraordinary, sweet voice. ‘Talk To Strangers’ was mastered in San Francisco by George Horn, who has been cutting vinyl since the 1960s for musicians such as Paul Simon, Sly & The Family Stone, Bob Dylan, and John Coltrane.
Fiona Bevan has already established a stellar career as an in-demand songwriter. As well as commissions for film, classical compositions, and a Tate exhibition, she co-wrote Little Things with Ed Sheeran, a 2012 No.1 single for One Direction. Last year, Bevan wrote, recorded and toured with jazz vocalist Gwyneth Herbert. Most recently, Bevan was in Los Angeles co-writing with Grammy Award-winning producer John Shanks.
