Spanish Folk Musician Josep Bas i Cabrera Dies

Josep Bas i Cabrera, saxophonist and clarinetist of La Romántica del Saladar, died March 19th of 2010. Pep Bas “Coeta”, as he was known by his friends, was the most veteran musician and soul of the band.

La Romántica del Saladar was formed in Jávea or Xàbia (in the local Valencian spelling), in the Marina Alta region of Alicante province, halfway between Montgó Mountain and the Mediterranean Sea. The musicians compile and rearrange traditional folk dances, including mazurcas, polcas, chotis, habaneras, valses, marchas moras, danzas, canciones de sobremesa and pasodobles.

The band has played at concerts hall, town dances and street performances throughout Spain and France. Their first album, Brises del Saladar (Blau-Discmedi), came out in 2001. The second album, titled Revetla (Blau-Discmedi) came out in 2006. The third and latest album, Casino Jalouse (Temps Records), came out this year.
