As part of Carnegie Hall’s Artist Perspectives series, Zakir Hussain conducted a weeklong workshop through Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall with music students from all over the world. He brought in Indian santoor player Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Kathak dancer Antonia Minnecola and Steve Smith (the former drummer from Journey). The workshops culminated in a performance on April 19, 2009 with Zakir, Antonia, Steve and the music students, which sold out.
Zakir performed three concerts at Zankel Hall offering very diverse programming. The April 26th performance was Classical Indian with Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, April 27th featured the Masters of Percussion with conga player Giovanni Hidalgo, Steve Smith and T.H. "Vikku" Vinayakram, and April 28th debuted the trio featuring Bela Fleck (banjo) and Edgar Meyer (IMG’s own!). The trio has recorded a full-length album which will be released in August 2009, with a North American tour in September-October 2009.
The grand finale on April 29th was Zakir’s debut in Carnegie Hall’s 2804 seat, Stern Auditorium, featuring the jazz trio Sangam, member of Remember Shakti and special guests pianist Jason Moran, Bela Fleck and T.H. "Vikku" Vinayakram, which too sold out.
