Scythian, the Washington DC – based Gypsy, Celtic and Americana quartet has announced a handful of New York shows in early May, and will wrap up the run at New York City’s Sullivan Hall on Thursday May 7, 2009. The self-proclaimed “adrenaline-peddlers” also announced that they will release a live CD this summer before heading into the studio to record their fourth album. Homegrown Music Network, a collective of independent bands, venues, festivals, stores, and fans among the jam, roots, folk and world music scene, named Sullivan Hall 2008 Venue of the Year, and Scythian took top honors for Studio Album of the Year.
Over the last three year’s Scythian has only performed in one New York City venue but now they’re looking to spread their wings and will be playing the fabled Sullivan Hall on Thursday, May 7th at 8pm. New York City is known to be a tough music town, but somehow Scythian has averaged around 400 people every show they’ve played there over the last couple of years. T
Scythian (sith-ee-yin) belts out a high-energy, adrenaline-peddling, interactive brand of music with one goal in mind; to get people on their feet and dancing. These classically trained musicians are natural showmen who seamlessly blend kicked-up Celtic, folk and world music, and deliver it with a punk-rock sensibility. Combine this with the driving rhythm of a jazz percussionist, and you’ve got the ingredients for a show you won’t soon forget. In a single song, they transport an audience across the globe with the alluring and dramatic strains of gypsy fiddles, the bounce of a Celtic reel, and then cross back over the border to pick up a Klezmer hook and some good old-fashioned bluegrass licks.
